About Fiona Ratzlaff

Fiona, Experienced Operations Director & Business Owner

Fiona Ratzlaff’s eclectic experience owning and managing businesses in fields as diverse as the arts and non-profits, marketing, healthcare, retail, IT, and tourism has developed a keen understanding of the challenges involved in managing and operating ventures.  As principal of Framework, Contractual COO and Referral Center, she applies her expertise, curiosity, and entrepreneurial drive to help service and retail for-profit companies and mission-driven nonprofits grow and realize their visions.

In her more than 30 years managing and owning businesses, Fiona has overseen the operations of several retail stores, lead marketing and sales for a medical software company, and created a department of operations for employee claims at a large, national healthcare concern.

Highly creative as a child, Fiona started studying art and music at the age of 5.  By high school, she had learned 17 instruments.  When she moved with her family from Canada to the USA, she continued nourishing her love of both art and the water by forming her first entrepreneurial venture, a boat detailing company.  Later, she navigated the complicated process of forming the non-profit Florida Fine Art Museum Corporation to educate the public on European, Canadian and US artisans and furniture makers. During college at the University of South Florida, Fiona interned and became a certified docent for the Salvador Dali Museum in St Petersburg.

Fiona then used her leadership and business skills as a project director for the Florida division of a multiple location market research firm.  There, she coordinated research teams on behalf of multi-national clients like Johnson and Johnson, Pfizer, Proctor and Gamble and GlaxoSmithKline.  Under her leadership, the Florida division turned a profit in nine months, and many of her innovative research and marketing processes were adopted by other locations.

After moving to New Mexico, she took on the operations and co-ownership of an optometric practice, where she revamped the billing department to recoup millions in un- and mis-filed claims.  Fiona also oversaw employee training and education and restructured the company’s staffing to improve efficiency and accuracy.

Taking this experience, she and a former partner owned and operated a private optometric practice, growing it seven-fold in five years. Fiona created the business operations model and staff training program, allowing the company to be self-sustaining.  For three years she was also the New Mexico Optometric Association Paraoptometric Committee Chair, creating the regulations and guidelines for the association’s continuing education program for paraoptometrics.  She also was liaison with the American Optometric Association to facilitate continuing education offerings.

Most recently, Fiona coordinated business development and customer support for an information technology company headquartered in New Mexico that serves local, regional, and national customers.

Both Fiona and her younger daughter suffer from food allergies.  To help them both eat well, she developed 133 recipes and a cookbook addressing the top food allergies, plus beef and gluten, testing and teaching them at her daughter’s school.

Fiona lives in New Mexico with her husband and daughter.  She loves to be outdoors on the water kayaking or boating.

Feedback & Reviews

When providing services like ours it is important to have our clients growing and developing as quickly as possible.

I had a very successful logistics and distribution company, unfortunately, due to Covid 19 we lost all our clients.
Before closing the company down I hired Framework.

The team at framework helped us restructure the business. Now I am proud to report the company is back on track.

Framework and their team, especially Fiona, have a wealth of knowledge and experience. Fiona has taken my all women-based company to a higher level in a very short period of time.
Yes, I would highly recommend Framework to any company that needs a COO that is very resourceful in their corner.

CEO

LOH, LLC – Logistics

Fiona, from Framework, uses her years of experience and success to guide executive leaders on how to reach their highest potential.

She objectively observed my communication style, provided me constructive feedback, and has helped me sharpen every aspect of communication style so that I can interact with people more effectively.

Being a CPA, I felt that my sales skills were lacking, and I dreaded sales presentation.  Fiona taught me to view a sales meeting as a presentation and I now look forward to presenting and customizing solutions for each of my prospective clients.

My experience with Framework goes back a few years when we were in need of help and restructuring.

We were a tiny little Optometric office that was making 1/3rd of it’s potential. We decided to take a leap of faith and see what Fiona could do with the company. Digging in and reforming the company without breaking the bank. She did not disappoint.

The practice became well known for Care, Customer Service, Education, and vast variety of Eyewear Products.

The end result was the practice grew 700 % in gross income in record time and we have been able to maintain it.

Kudos to any business that is lucky enough to work with Framework.

What Can Framework Do for You?

We can help you grow faster, have smoother operations, more profitability, better systems, and fewer headaches. This also gives your company the right kind of leader to help you bring in more qualified staff for your business and it is more efficient.

Every company grows at its own pace, on its own time.  With that being said, not all businesses need to bring in a full-on COO.  When you bring in a Contractual COO the focus is to have them spend a portion of their time with your company and therefore minimizing your cost and maximizing your learning curve.  You are only paying for what you need.  These types of COOs have had to deal with a business like yours and are aware of what has been working and what has not.  This is effect will save you time since they are most likely to have been through it before.

Framework provides a different type of process and structure.  When developing a business there is not a magic wand to make a business run instantly.  It takes hard work and many steps.  We work on your company in stages and work at the speed that works for a CEO.

Contractual COO a Low Risk?

As a matter of fact, yes.  The difference is you are not taking on a full time COO to see what they can do for you.  Instead, you are working with a Contractual COO that has experience working with many different companies and a more practical knowledge.

This type of COO has more flexibility on how and when they work as well as being a lighter load on your payroll which in turn is more cost effective.  There are no long-term commitments with Framework unless you choose to.

Are you starting up, needing structure, not growing, or need to re-vamp your business?  Framework can help you with these issues.
